This is the method one uses if the wall is framed on the floor and tilted up into position. You plumb a wall by placing a perfectly straight straightedge from the top plate to the bottom plate. This straightedge is placed between wall studs so it only is touching the plates.

By code 2x3 s may be used for this purpose if the wall is no taller than 10 feet and the studs are spaced every 16 inches.
